Rebels with a cause
We’re Sarah Beran and Brooks Bell, the two co-founders of Worldclass. We were both successful professionals in our 30s when we were diagnosed with late-stage colon cancer. We survived the disease, but the experience changed us forever, and now we’re driven by keeping others from having to go through the same thing.
It’s all about colonoscopies
While it is never technically too early to look for polyps, the recommended age for a first colonoscopy is now 45.
Some studies have shown that about 30% of people have at least one polyp by their mid-40s, so this means that everyone should be checking out that ass - the year they turn 45 - regardless of sex, race, or income.
And if you’re under 45, you should be encouraging your ever-so-slightly older friends and family and - hey, why not your enemies too? - to get a colonoscopy. It might just save their lives.
Colorectal cancer prevention is not an issue for some : it’s a compassionate, human one that affects us all.
In rural Western North Carolina, which is home to many migrant workers, there are multiple barriers for patients in getting the colon care they need. These include lack of insurance, underfunding for high-risk patients, language and translation issues, problems getting to appointments in main service areas, and inability to complete colonoscopy prep.
Through our partnership with Blue Ridge Health and UNC, we’re supporting this community in solving all these issues. The driving goal of Worldclass is to help reverse the trend of colorectal cancer’s rapidly growing rates, and we’re going to start local, here in our home state.
But we can only achieve this with your support!
